#EmbraceEquity

Woman Arise CIC joins other women throughout the world today as we celebrate womanhood. This year’s theme “Embracing Equity “is such a powerful theme.

What does Embracing Equity mean for us?

-As an organisation we realise that multiple forms of identities can interact to create unique patterns of oppression for women and most importantly that all oppression is linked. Women may be disadvantaged or discriminated in various ways because of overlapping identities i.e., race, gender, sexuality, religion, weight, physical appearance, and socio-economic status.

These social identities can work on multiple levels thereby impacting and resulting in unique experiences, opportunities, and barriers that women may face an individual level or as a group. Due to this multiplicity effect of social identities, we realize that oppression cannot be reduced to only one part of an identity; each oppression is dependent on and shapes the other and this may be both empowering and oppressing.

As an organisation we realize without that without an intersectional lens our work to tackle the challenges that women face we may likely just end up perpetuating systems of inequalities.

For us as an organisation #EmbracingEquity means creating a society where all women regardless of their background have equal access to opportunities, resources and rights and this includes.

· Safety and security: Women should be protected from gender-based violence and harassment and have equal access to justice.

· Political participation: Women should have equal representation and participation in political decision-making processes.

· Access to education: Women should have the same opportunities to access education and training as men.

· Career advancement: Women should have the same opportunities for career advancement as men, including access to leadership positions.

· Work-life balance: Women should have the same opportunities as men to balance work and family responsibilities.

· Healthcare: Women should have access to quality healthcare services, including reproductive healthcare.

· Safety and security: Women should be protected from gender-based violence and harassment and have equal access to justice.

· Empowerment: Women should be empowered to make choices about their lives and have control over their own bodies and futures.

· Equal pay: Women should be paid the same as men for doing the same job.

Embracing equity for women also means addressing the intersectionality of different identities and experiences. The hope and resilience of women’s courage passing down through generations and the continuing to strive for change and equality as there is still work to do and more battles that we are yet to overcome.

Wishing all women, a 2023 International Women’s Day that is filled with hope.
