There is so much to say about Theresa Phondo, including her accomplishments as an artist, a career woman, and a mother. Theresa was introduced to us as an artist through Zathu Band, an ensemble of young people by Girl Effect that used art (song, dance and theatre) to engage and tackle various social issues (relationships, poverty, sexual reproductive health, and so on) affecting the Malawian youth.
We are all aware that a majority of artists struggle to successfully transition from a well-known brand to solo endeavors (think Disney/Nickelodeon stars). However, Theresa made it all seem so easy when she branched out of Zathu and effortlessly marked her spot on the Malawi gospel scene with her singe “You” in 2021. As an established solo artist, she is making significant strides in the industry and establishing herself as one of Africa's upcoming gospel musicians.
Her popularity and influence skyrocketed after the release of her single "Blessings" in 2022. Several international celebrities, including Meagan Good, Lecrae, Devon Franklin, and others, have used the well-crafted song on their social media pages. As of now, the song has received over 400,000 Spotify streams and has been featured in over 100,000 Instagram reels. With these numbers, we cannot be surprised that she has been a number one artist on the Malawi top 10 on Spotify for two months now (July and August). To top it off, Theresa is currently a Cover girl for Fresh Gospel Africa Playlist on Spotify for this week!
As she continues to broaden her audience, she collaborated with international gospel artists from South Africa (Noel Mio) and Nigeria (Saly Ly) on her song “Blessings”.
As a career woman, who also happens to be a go-getter, she recently leveraged her status as a loyal Standard Bank customer to market herself to the Bank. With this, she landed herself an ambassadorship deal for the Switch and Win promotion.
Theresa is showing us that women should not limited to a single field. Women can be brilliant artists, renowned career women, or excellent mothers, wives, or anything they want to be, all at the same time. And, it is our responsibility to create an environment where women and young girls don’t feel the need to pick just one of the many things they want to be.
