The Silent Abuse

Gender-based violence affects millions of women around the world. Many women suffer in silence, never receiving the justice they deserve. While some may know their abusers; for example, family members, partners, or colleagues, some may not. In both cases, the fear of retaliation and the potential consequences of speaking out can be overwhelming. It is time to step up and help end this cycle of violence.

The effects of silent abuse can be distressing for women. They may experience emotional trauma and lasting psychological damage. The fact that these abuses often happen aside makes it difficult for others to intervene. Additionally, many women feel ashamed or embarrassed to speak up about their experiences. This can lead to a sense of isolation and hopelessness, making it even harder to seek help.

Recently, while visiting my cousin's house, I witnessed a group of angry boys aged 16 to 24, cursing and assaulting two girls who were leaving a nearby party for no reason at all. Despite witnessing the violence, I was unable to intervene as I was just a visitor. This experience led me to conduct a small survey among my contacts, and I was shocked to discover that almost 78% of the women on my phone have been verbally or physically abused and harassed for no reason. Unfortunately, justice is often not served in these cases, leaving victims without recourse.

It is the responsibility of law enforcers and different organizations to protect women and ensure that abusers are held accountable for their actions. This requires a multifaceted approach, including education and awareness campaigns, providing resources and support for victims, and implementing stricter laws and penalties for those who commit gender-based violence. Only by working together can we hope to create a world where women are safe and protected from harm.

Gender-based violence against women is a pressing issue that demands swift action. Silent sufferers must be empowered to seek justice and receive support. Law enforcement should be proactive in holding abusers accountable and creating safer environments for women. We must collaborate to end this cycle of violence and build a better future for women worldwide.
