2023 has been a fantastic year for a lot of artists, creatives, and, of course, us consumers. We have had the most organized events/shows , excellent music, great international representation (Joe Kells, winner of My Booth Esther Chinga Lewis and team, The Voice, Africa), and of course the countless brand/ambassadorship deals. Everyone brought something unique! And witnessing that has been quite satisfying.
We saw creatives try out new ideas and venture into uncharted territories. For instance, "Blind Date”, which is a popular show on YouTube by Madness Entertainment which a lot of people seem to enjoy. We should be excited for all the new and exciting events happening in the coming months. I, (like many others) am eagerly looking forward to the premiere of The Kingston's, a new reality Television show, and the first of its kind to air on Malawian Television.
The Kingston’s will feature the personal lives of this year’s male artist of the year, Zeze Kingston and his partner, Dorothy Shonga, a socialite and businesswoman. The show is expected to premiere on December 17th,2023, as the couple will be hosting their wedding engagement ceremony.
I am certain that the show will shake up the entertainment industry, change how things are done, and will most definitely encourage a new wave of innovation that we haven't seen before. We have had reality television shows before, such as Rise Africa in 2016 (contestants discussing solutions to a variety of African problems), and Ka jive (a dance competition on Times Television) in 2014, but nothing like what we are about to witness, an invitation into the unfiltered lives of Malawian celebrities.
I understand that some people despise reality TV shows and everyone who watches them (based on what I've heard about Big Brother or Keeping Up with the Kardashians). However, I would like to remind everyone that the goal of entertainment is to provide us with an exciting break or escape from our own realities. The Kingston's is our own local show that will present us with something we are not used to or have access to, relatability; The Kingston’s are Malawians that speak our language, share our cultures, and face the same problems we do.
I will clear up my schedule just to watch this show, you should too!
