Activism is the act of advocating for a cause, using vigorous campaigning to bring about a specific change, often through protests, rallies, or other forms of public demonstration. While some may think that activism is attention-seeking, the reality is that activism has played a bigger role in many historical and contemporary social and political movements.
There are types of activism, including political activism, but my focus is social media activism and how it can impact women's empowerment.
Just as women support each other through different ways, including sharing each other's work on social media, they can also fully support each other through social media or internet activism.
One of the most popular activism movements is the social media #MeToo movement started by Tarana Burke, an American Activist. The movement was against sexual harassment and publicize abuses committed by powerful men. It started trending in the year 2017, when Alyssa Milano, an American actress and activist, and thousands of women tweeted and posted on Instagram the Harvey Weinstein sexual abuse cases and their stories about assault, according to Wikipedia.
In Malawi, just like any other country, there are social issues that can be addressed through social media activism, for instance, unequal opportunities, domestic violence and possibly gender based violence.
In conclusion, activism has the power to drive social and political change and empower individuals, especially women in societies to take action. By raising awareness, inspiring others, and pushing for policy change, activists have the potential to make a lasting impact on society.
