Happy Independence Day! On July 6, 1964, Malawi became independent from British rule. Every year on this day Malawians commemorate independence, national identity and unity. On this day, Malawians choose to honor their history and achievements as a sovereign state through parades, prayers, dance and other activities.
Various artists, businesses, and organizations plan a variety of events and activities, providing an exciting list of options to Malawians on how they can celebrate and have fun . Here is how a Malawian can celebrate independence whilst keeping in mind of the country's history, culture, and aspirations.
Attend a show ! What better way to take part in the festivities than to join those who will provide you with a true Malawian experience via the expression of local art? Patience Namadingo, Edger and Davis will tonight hold a show at Lilongwe's Illusions Club, Golden Peacock. Malawians in the diaspora are not to be left out as our local artist Zeze Kingston will join the award winning and UK based Hazel Mak to perform at the Independence Celebration and Fundraising Dinner and Dance Achievers Awards event in Derby,UK.
Shop at a discount ! The economy has been very hard on all of us and we could all use an opportunity to save some money. If you have a few Kwacha’s to spare, today is a good day to check out items and services from some of your favorite brands, local companies and shops who have chosen to commemorate this day by offering their services and goods to a Malawian at a discount. Some of the stores to check out are Shoprite and Blockbuster.
Join the Virtual Celebrations ! Some of you may want to spend the day at home, basking in the magnificence of everything this day signifies. While at home, you can still be part of the celebrations by virtually attending a Poetic Showcase of Malawi's 60th Independence, an event by Standard Bank which will be streamed on their Facebook page, from 6:30 to 7:30 tonight. The event will feature notable poets like Q Malewezi and Phinduzaye.
Your way! The true beauty of this day is that it allows us to spend it as we choose; simply being secure and free to do whatever we want is yet another way to celebrate it. Happy Independence Day !
