In 2021, Madalo Yusuf embarked on a transformative journey by founding Miss Heritage Malawi, a beauty pageant that goes beyond aesthetics to empower women and celebrate Malawi's rich cultural heritage. Inspired by her personal struggles and fueled by a desire to create opportunities for others, Madalo’s vision has made her a beacon of hope for young Malawian women aspiring to make their mark on the international stage.
Madalo’s inspiration stemmed from her own challenges in pursuing beauty pageants. Sponsorships were hard to come by, often leaving her dreams unfulfilled. When opportunities finally began to open up, she resolved to change the narrative. "I wanted to be the change I want to see," she explained. Recognizing the struggles she faced, she created a platform where young women could represent Malawi internationally without facing the hurdles she once endured.
When Miss Heritage Malawi launched, Madalo’s vision was clear: women empowerment. From the beginning, she integrated meaningful themes into the pageant, focusing on issues such as mental health awareness. “Mental health affects the youth, and seeing a fellow youth understanding you and making you feel seen makes you want to seek help and feel much better,” she said. This approach allowed contestants to not only showcase their beauty and talent but also become ambassadors for important causes.
Madalo’s emphasis on culture was another defining aspect of Miss Heritage Malawi. She recognized the importance of showcasing Malawi’s rich heritage on the global stage. "We are on the map, but what’s left is for Malawi to be seen," she noted. Through the pageant, contestants highlight the unique traditions, customs, and beauty of Malawian culture, offering a glimpse into the country’s identity while promoting pride in its heritage.
Starting Miss Heritage Malawi came with its surprises, but not the challenges one might expect. Contrary to the struggles often associated with launching such initiatives, Madalo experienced overwhelming support. "I had support I did not expect, which made me feel loved and to never underestimate things just because I am just starting," she shared.
One of the most memorable milestones in Madalo’s journey was when she received her first cash sponsorship from Mika. The experience was unexpected and deeply touching. "Mika contacted me wanting to sponsor my event with cash, which caught me by surprise. Such is rare, and may God forever bless them," she recalled. The sponsorship came through a simple act of kindness—a friend reposting her event poster on social media. It reinforced Madalo’s belief in the power of sharing and supporting others, as opportunities can often come from the least expected places.
Navigating societal perceptions of beauty pageants in Malawi required a collaborative mindset. Instead of competing with other pageants, Madalo focused on building partnerships. "We are all trying to achieve the same goal. Why try competing? This is where we collaborate in projects and the likes," she explained. Her inclusive approach fostered unity and allowed for the growth of pageantry in Malawi as a whole.
Today, Madalo Yusuf stands as a testament to the power of resilience, vision, and community support. Through Miss Heritage Malawi, she continues to empower young women, elevate Malawian culture, and inspire others to pursue their dreams fearlessly. Her journey serves as a reminder that change begins with one person’s determination to make a difference.
