Female Journalists Take to the Streets Against GBV. Reported by Precious Kumbani & Faith Kaunde

Female journalists in Blantyre and Lilongwe have taken to the streets to demonstrate against increased cases of sexual violence and other forms of Gender-Based Violence in the country.

In Lilongwe, demonstrations against gender based violence including rape and defilement are underway. The journalists will deliver their petition at Capital Hill at the Ministry of Gender offices. The protests have been organised by the Association of Women in Media (Awome).

In Blantyre, the journalists were demonstrating from Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital through Masauko Chipembere Highway to Blantyre City Council (BCC) where they will delivered a petition to Emmanuel Kanjunjunju, Director of health services at BCC, Awome chairperson Edyth Kambalame stressed the need for authorities to to toughen the laws to deter would be offenders.

Politicians, representatives of Civil Society Organisations and male media practitioners also joined the demonstrations.

Speaker of the National Assembly Catherine Gotani Hara who joined female journalists in a march against rape and defilement, has called upon the nation to rise up and end the spate of violence against women.
