There has been a tremendous amount of effort put into breast cancer awareness in the month of October. As we near the end of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, let’s take a look at some of the events towards the cause that occurred during the month.
Think Pink
Think Pink, Malawi, one of the leading organizations fighting breast cancer, hosted a fundraiser brunch at The Farmer's Daughter Café in Lilongwe over the weekend. The proceeds from the event will go toward their mobile clinics and community outreach programs, allowing them to continue educating and raising awareness among women about the symptoms of cancer, warning signs, and available resources.
Think Pink Malawi also collaborated with Wandikweza Clinic, a health clinic in Dowa, to provide free screening on October 15th.
The Bra Bank
The Bra Bank is a charity organization which donates used and new bras to less privileged young girls in the country. In the month of October, they put forth an initiative towards breast cancer awareness. The organization is collecting donations of old, unused, and unwanted bras, which will be donated to various organizations where they will be sold to raise funds for medical care and cancer research. The bras will also be donated to needy women who may require them especially those who were affected by breast cancer.
One of its representatives, Ms Judith Msonthi communicated that they thought the initiative was a fun and quirky approach to raising breast cancer awareness to get more women involved. And I can attest to the fact that it is indeed working as one cannot just continue scrolling through when they come across it on social media.
Bra Bank has currently collected 1000 and hopes to donate 5000 bras by December this year. They are still collecting bras in the communicated spots as communicated on the poster below.
It is up to you and me to ensure that these people's and organizations efforts are not in vain. Let us remember that these are real people who have chosen to dedicate their time and resources to serve a lot of women in the country. Lets do our part by going for regular checkups, and mammograms to increase early detection .
Remember regular checkups, means early detection and early detection means early treatment which can increase your chances of survival.
