"What now? Is the question that I have been asking myself over and over and over again. Thinking about the future of Malawi, my future and the future of next generation really breaks my heart.
On the 17th of June 2024, the Body of the Vice president of Malawi Dr Saulos Klaus chilima whose life was cut short in a plane crash that also took the lives of 9 others was laid to rest in Ntcheu District.
A day that started like any other normal day ended with death robbing us the most important person in our lives. Death really is a silent visitor. Sometimes it feels like just one horrible dream that you'll wake up from. I think it's safe to say death is wicked!
His death has left millions of Malawians heartbroken and worried for their future as Chilima was the symbol of hope for a better nation and a better Malawi. He was pronounced dead on the 11th of June 2024 24 hours after the plane that carried him and was supposed to land at Mzuzu airport went missing.
To be frank, after the death of the former president of Malawi Dr Bingu wamuthalika, I lost hope that Malawi will have a great leader ever again, I thought that was the end of everything. But Chilima, a young vibrant and energetic man came into the picture.
His inspiring leadership, compassionate nature and his dedication in serving others made a lasting impact on us Malawians especially the youths.
Speaking at the burial ceremony, the Archbishop Thomas Luke Msusa of Blantyre Diocese said that you only know how deep a well is when it's dried up. He said this in comparison of the works Chilima did to the nation and how the Malawian have mourned his departure.
I remember during one of his political rallies, he said he will die for the Malawian flag. In other words he meant he will die for the nation of malawi, while serving the Malawians.
Mr Ben Chilima, who spoke on behalf of the bereaved family, asked the President to Mark the site where the plane crashed in Chikangawa as a memorial site for Malawians to always remember and honor the fallen heroes.
The departed Vice president while alive was known by his fearless spirit, his love for the nation and his love for God. Chilima served as a vice president from 2014 to 2019 and from 2020 to 2024 alongside Lazarus Chakwera the President.
Before joining politics, he held leadership positions in major companies like coca-cola, Unilever and Airtel Malawi. He was married to his wife Mary Nkhamanyachi Chilima and had two Children, Sean and Elizabeth. He will always remembered as a family man, his dedication when it comes to church activities and his dedication in serving Malawians.
Like Sean Chilima the son to the late vice president said "a man only dies when he is forgotten". Chilima's death is like a scar. He has left scars in our hearts and we will always remember his beautiful demeanor. The Legacy of His Excellency the Vice President of Malawi Late Dr Saulos Klaus Chilima will live on.
