When most people imagine show organisers, they probably think of artists organising their own shows or a group of powerful men in the music industry. There are, however, three exceptional Malawian women based in South Africa, (Judith Njikho, Florence Phiri and Jane Nachuma) who are working towards changing this perception. Through their company, Big Girls Entertainment, these women have sworn to showcase Malawian talent across the borders, specifically South Africa.
Bumping into an old interview on Mikozi Network Facebook Page, the Big Girls Enter founders were quoted saying that women can uplift the entertainment industry better than men. They also said that they were just getting started and promised that they won’t stop until Malawian musicians make it both home and abroad. Big Girls Entertainment has organised several shows in the past in South African pubs featuring some of the big names in the industry including Onesimus, Janta, and Saint. BGE plans to organise much more shows in the future.
It is high time the industry started recognising and appreciating such efforts. What these women are doing will help expose our musicians to international scenes. Through these shows, artists can learn how others are doing it. To add to that, having women in such decision-making positions is important for the entertainment industry as it helps bring in more diversity during events and also inspire young or up and coming artists (or entertainers) in the industry.
Furthermore, it is a well-known fact that female artists in this country get side-lined from shows, having girls in positions like this will surely push for equality and inclusion of female entertainers.
Judith, Florence and Jane, have been and are still doing a good job. They are providing a platform for our local artists, including those based in South Africa, to be fully recognised. I, as well as you, should be expecting a lot from them this year as they are continuing their good work of promoting and exposing our local artists to the international industry. This is rare and creative, let us boost their morale by showing up to these events!
This is really amazing honestly and the fact their even women doing this just makes its more fascinating and i hope some of us upcoming artists get to be recognised too
