Successful career women had aspirations and ambitions that drove them to where they are now. The experience they had whilst pursuing these ambitions and aspirations, puts them in a better position to provide guidance and support to other people. Young women on similar career paths and even those on different career paths can look up to these women as role models. I would like to highlight the significance of mentorship programs and events, especially when it comes to career growth.
First, mentorship programs play a greater role in providing guidance and support to mentees when it comes to overcoming gender barriers, especially at workplaces. Women in different workplaces are mostly looked down on and mostly likely to be denied opportunities than their male counterparts. Mentorship programs equip women with leadership skills and empower them to stand up for themselves, and stop at nothing to achieve their goals.
Mentorship programs help people navigate their careers. This falls especially on those sharing the same career paths with the mentors. Mentors talk about their career experiences, from how they started, to where they are, including the hardships and how they surmounted them. All of this knowledge and skills, when passed on, prepares the mentees on what to expect in their careers and how best to navigate them in order to succeed and reach their goals.
Mentorship programs not only provide mentors with valuable exposure but also assist them in promoting themselves to stakeholders, customers, and potential partners, opening doors to various opportunities. As an example, I came across a Facebook advertisement for an upcoming event in Lilongwe scheduled for July 22nd, 2023. This event features a line-up of inspiring female guest speakers, including Tadala Chikwenzule, a Lawyer and Entrepreneur; Theana Msolomba, a Financial Educator; and Stivella Rethabile Ngwenyama, a Mental Health Advocate and Nouthetic Counsellor. The purpose of the given example is to highlight the significance and appeal of the mentorship events, indicating why I am eager not to miss it.
We can all agree that Mentorship programs are essential when it comes to helping women develop the necessary skills and knowledge they need in their careers. Therefore, I urge career women in this country to consider hosting more of these programs to reach out to a larger number of women.
