We are all aware of the “Buy Malawi Products” initiative, which was launched in 2009 with the aim of promoting the purchase of products made in Malawi. Numerous businesses took advantage of this initiative to market their products and draw in more customers. I can say with certainty that “Buy Malawi” has greatly improved the lives of Malawians, particularly those who are directly involved in production but on the periphery, like small holder farmers.
The catchy phrase and initiative transformed the attitudes of many Malawians toward purchasing local goods and supporting local businesses. The initiative pushes buyers to consider buying a Malawian product than an imported one. As for me, Initially, when I went shopping, I could just grab whatever I wanted, regardless of where it was made. Now, I take the time to consider Malawian products first before moving to other products.
However, as a consumer, I cannot hold back from voicing my dissatisfaction with some Malawian products, services, and businesses. The experiences I have had with the products and some businesses makes me side with my friends, acquaintances and other Malawians who would rather shop at foreign owned businesses (i.e. Indian stores) than a Malawian.
When it comes to purchasing Malawian products, the quality of some products has been a serious worry. The obvious expectation is, if a product is certified and sold in these large retail stores (Chipiku, ShopRite, Game etc.) it must have met all of the quality product requirements. There are several Malawian products in our retail shops that make one wonder if the feel of patriotism that comes with buying local is even worth it.
Another issue of great concern, is the poor customer service which one experiences. Many people have voiced concerns over how shop owners or assistants judge and make customers feel uncomfortable. As for the Online enterprises, they may actually be the worst. One would think, they are there to make shopping easier, but alas! Most of the online businesses I have dealt with, small and big take time to respond and made me, as a customer feel like I was begging instead of shopping. Generally, one can conclude that online businesses must be engaged with at one's own risk, as there is a high possibility of one not receiving what was ordered or worse, falling victim to a hoax .
It brings me great pleasure as a Malawian to know that my money is directly benefiting another Malawian. However, customers should not regret purchasing Malawian items or shopping in Malawian shops. Yes, we will continue to buy Malawi, but can Malawian businesses improve their products' quality and customer service?
Buy Malawi!!
