Nya-uyu Paves Way For 'Modern Chinamwali' Secondary Schools

With today's technological advancements, the Malawian female comedian and the CEO of Vilekeke TV, Felistus Nya-uyu Ngwira, has been driven to embark on a transformative journey to initiate her Vilekeke Secondary School tour called 'Modern Chinamwali'. Her mission is to guide the youth through the challenges of the modern world.

According to Nya-uyu, she emphasized the impact of the internet and contemporary living on the 2000 generation saying there is a need for guidance. She was quoted, '' children born in the 2000s are not troublesome but because of the internet and the advanced modern way of life they are exposed to various things. It is our duty to guide them.'' Furthermore, the tour aims to address the prevalent issues in secondary schools.

Here in Malawi, the misconception among parents that once a child reaches secondary school, concerns are limited to fees and sustenance is a big problem. Nya-uyu said there is much happening in secondary schools as such students make mistakes because they have no one to talk to and that her focus is on initiating transformational talks rather than mere entertainment.

To add to that, she is determined to bridge the communication gap between students and parents as she said that parents are unaware of most things happening in secondary schools. The tour encompasses both girls and boys, recognizing that boys oftenly are sidelined despite them all together existing in the same environment. She further emphasized that these things that the students are doing parents find them unbelievable therefore the insightful tour engages students in discussions on education, social issues, and small-scale entrepreneurship skills.

This has taken me to the 'old chinamwali' usually happening in rural areas, where young people are initiated differently according to their cultures and are taught how to apply different life skills mainly led by their local leaders or authorized community members. I have commended Nyau-yu's idea of modern chinamwali as it will attract more youth since time has changed and there is a need to do things in modern ways too. This will help the country in different ways, including enhancing development through mindset change, since these are the leaders of tomorrow.

Nya-uyu's commitment to initiating a 'Modern Chinamwali' in secondary schools reflects a proactive approach to the challenges faced by young youth. By fostering open dialogs and addressing critical issues, the tour seeks to empower the 2000 generation to navigate the modern world with resilience and wisdom.
