Lessons From Women In My Family; Honoring Their Stories

Every family has a collection of life stories woven by the women who came before us. These stories—both joyous and tragic—hold great lessons that shape who we are and who we aspire to be. As I reflect on the women in my family, I am struck by two recurring themes which are resilience and the potential every one of us has in his or her own unique ways.

One of the most inspiring women in my family was my mother. She balanced multiple jobs, including being a full time police officer, just to ensure that I and my sisters had the opportunities she never did before she passed away. Her story is one of determination, love and sacrifice. She taught me the value of perseverance, even when the odds are stacked against you. Her last words to me, “always work hard in whatever you do and always remember why you’re working,” echo in my mind whenever I feel overwhelmed. May her soul continue resting in peace.

Yet, alongside stories of resilience are those of missed opportunities. My aunt, a brilliant woman with dreams of becoming a teacher, had to abandon her education to care for her younger siblings. I often wonder how her life would have turned out had she been given the chance to follow her dreams. Her story is a reminder of how circumstances can suppress potential and of how important it is to create space for our ambitions so as to give no room to any limitations.

As I step into 2025, I carry both these lessons with me, including those learned from other inspiring women. From my mother, I draw strength and purpose, determined to work hard while staying aligned with my goals. From my aunt, I draw urgency as well as the need to seize every opportunity and not let fear or hesitation hold me back.

This year, my goal is to be intentional about my growth, both personally and professionally. I want to honor the sacrifices of the women who came before me by living my life fully and unapologetically. Whether it’s tackling new challenges, writing with more depth or nurturing my relationships, I want to ensure that I am reaching my full potential. This is not just for myself, but for the legacy I hope to leave behind.

To my fellow women, here’s something to take away: may we continue to celebrate, learn from and honor the stories of the women in our families. Their triumphs and struggles are the foundation upon which we stand. Let’s use them as a guide to step boldly into the future. Here’s to 2025—a year of breaking barriers and writing our own inspirational stories!
