An Inspiring Story Of Nancie Maziko Kawale

Charity begins at home and ends somewhere. In Malawi there are many young women who are making a big difference to the community in one way or the other and one of them is Nancie Maziko Kawale, a founder of a Community Based Organisation, called Purple Inc.

As young as she is, born in January 2002, she founded the organisation in 2021 which was then called Purple Article created to be a safe space for youth as well as to promote and market them in the art industry.  It was later changed to Purple Inc after months as she wanted to make and be using the money which was raised from promoting art for charity purposes.

''I have always wanted to share what I have with people as I was growing up. My biggest drive has been the words by my favourite teacher that if you have two shirts, give one to your brother.'' She was quoted. She further said that her goals include changing mindsets, nurturing productive leaders and creating a sustainable future. She said the organisation can achieve these through various ways with hope to expand despite the challenges they meet. For example, she says firstly they are working with kids in primary schools, understanding issues affecting them and working towards providing the children with learning materials as well as creating a conducive learning environment. Secondly, she said, they want to keep every girl in school by providing them with proper menstrual management programs and also teaching them how to make sanitary materials from locally available and healthy materials. Lastly, the organisation will also tackle mental health, one of the problems affecting most individuals, including children in schools, which results in poor performance at school.

Purple Inc also has reach out programs, found in the chain of mental health, which have different projects aiming at helping those in need. A recent project example is the Hope Project, about to take place on 23rd December 2023, whose target is reaching out to elderly women. She added that Purple Inc is not funded, she uses her earnings and donations to keep their programs running and they only have volunteers.

Helping the community does not need much as we have seen how Nancie Maziko Kawale started a Community Based Organisation at a young age. The organisation has been reaching out to children and even the elderly through its mental health programs, assistance in children's education and the provision of menstrual hygiene programs to girls. The organisation is therefore planning to make a bigger change in the community through its projects. Let us support them in all ways possible.
